Word
Processing Software
I believe word processing is very useful tool in
education today. It makes it very simple and easy for students to practice
their typing skills while also helping with their grammar. Teachers can use
this when assigning writing assignments for the kids. Word will show them where
there mistakes are and the students may be able to fix it before turning in the
work. The biggest issue that I can think of when it comes to word is that it is
taking away from students handwriting skills. The more students use Processing
the worse their handwriting gets because of the lack of using it (Roblyer &
Doening, 2011).
Spreadsheet
Software
Spreadsheet is a tough one for me, I don’t really have
a clue when it comes to using it. I know it can be very impactful in the
classroom though. I think students would enjoy having a visual of the changes
in numbers and how it might affect things like there grades (Roblyer &
Doening, 2011). The issue with it is if
students get too good at using excel they may forget how to actually do the
math, instead they would just plug it into the program to get answers.
“Teachers usually have to allow time for students to become comfortable with
the software” (Roblyer & Doening, 2011, pg125).
Presentation
Software
Presentation software allows teachers to think through
what they will be presenting and what they will say during the lesson when they
are making the PowerPoint (Roblyer & Doening, 2011). I think if used in the
right way presentation will make more of an impact on your lesson, especially
enhancing the key thoughts that need to be driven in. There is some down sides
of presentation as well. “Young (2009) cites a British study that reported
students perceived use of PowerPoint- based lectures among the most
boring”(Roblyer & Doening, 2011, pg130) . I agree with this statement, we
all know that those dreaded history PowerPoints are terrible to sit through.
Classroom
Use
I am going to talk about the classroom use with
presentation. Presentation can be very helpful in a math class. I believe my
students will enjoy seeing graphics and real life examples of the problems they
are working on. The thing I would like to do with presentation the most is,
have interactive quiz or practice problems on some slides. I can get little
clickers that can be linked to my computer that shows what each student thinks
is the correct answer. This will give me real time results so we can talk
through problems that the kids got wrong to try and find their error. I just
have to be very careful not to become too reliant on presentation in my class,
because too much will bore the students and I will lose their attention.

I always say that the presentation program should be a help and not hindrance. I agree with it being used wrong in so many ways. Some people rely so much on the slides that they forget they are presenting; and that just comes with preparation. You can't just make a PowerPoint and not go over it, better yet rehearse it. I use presentation in my classroom for images or just to display work I make take a picture of because it doesn't show well on my Elmo. I believe presentation should be taught so that people can understand its proper use.
ReplyDeleteI never knew that you could create a quiz through presentation software! I think that would be beneficial in any subject, in any classroom. I understand what Young talks about when he found that students find presentation software often the most boring. I think what you have here can be interactive and fun for students. The use of presentation software may be much for stimulating for student learners rather than a teacher just writing on the whiteboard! What do you think?
ReplyDeleteThe classroom use idea is great. I actually had a math class where we did this for quizzes. I found it much more interesting than normal paper and pencil quizzes. The students will also benefit from the teacher going over the questions right away; "projection with presentation software is useful when the whole class needs to see example problems and how to solve them" (Roblyer and Doering, 2011, pg.132). Looks like you have the right idea on how to use presentation software properly.
