Blog Assignment 2

Commericial Hypermedia Product, Reference Material
I chose to talk about reference materials.  Roblyer and Doering (2012) stated, “…; in addition there is increased availability of reference materials on the Internet for little to no cost.” (pg 175).  Then, Roblyer and Doering (2012) stated, “Some materials have simulations, animation, videos, and\or Internet links to still more materials.” (pg 176). My link goes hand in hand with the online and has more links to yet more material. I found a website that has a collection on math journals on various different topics. I could see myself using this is a classroom as a back-up. If used in a higher math class the links could be helpful for students to dig deeper into something they are interested about, or a topic that they may be struggling with to grasp. It would be difficult to incorporate this into a low math class, because the math lingo in the journals can be quiet confusing. In this case I would use the link for myself to brush up on topics before presenting to the class. So either in an upper or lower class this website would still be useful to the students either directly or indirectly.

Chosen Multimedia Authoring Tool, Type 4
I chose to talk about virtual environments. Roblyer and Doering (2012) stated, “Through various visual and tactile devices, VR can represent real or imaginary worlds in which the user interacts through multiple senses: a true multimedia environment” (pg. 193). I believe this can be very useful in the classroom. VR is getting more and more popular as a tools for many instructional needs (Roblyer and Doering, 2012).  Birchfield and Megowan- Romanowicz (2009) report that use of and immersive environment for teaching science concepts increased achievement of high school students (Roblyer & Doering, 2012, pg 196). I found a link that allows you to perform a virtual knee surgery. I think this is very helpful in the classroom. Especially in anatomy classes. Teachers can allow students to perform the virtual surgery as a learning tool. Things such as these would also be very helpful for pre-med students. http://www.edheads.org/activities/knee/

  1. Having reference material to be able to go to and brush up your own personal knowledge before having to teach on the material is a great idea. Being able to search through these math journals will be a major benefit to you, as well as any student trying to find more information on a topic; "to add more value, these resources are accompanied by search tools that make searching for information in the application both easy and efficient." (Roblyer & Doering 2011 pg.176).

  2. I've heard of math journals but I've never heard of them online! I think this would be beneficial for upper level math or AP classes! The virtual surgery is something that I know my med school friend loves! He uses it in many of his classes at UAB! I think high school students would find it so interesting! Roblyer and Doering (2012) stated that "Although not as realistic as full immersion VR, web-based VR costs much less to implement" so perhaps your class could create a web-based virtual environment for a classroom project (p. 194). Another benefit to that is that YouTube is free and full of online virtual realities and surgeries
